“Wah” is relatable to “wow” but so much more.

WAH is short for "We Are Here". Wah is an interjection to express amazement, admiration. It is an exclamation used in many Asian languages, not limited to Toisan, Cantonese, Hokkien, Mandarin, as well as in Korea and India. 華 wah in the Chinese language is an adjective with several meanings, including:

WHAT WE ARE DOING

Preserve heritage. For the future. For the people who come after us.
So that we are part of something continuous.

So the past don't really die.
So the community lives on.

Pass on knowledge from Elders to the youth so that new generations can inherit both intangible and tangible assets, the memories and preserve them. The project will support local and community needs to address erasure, displacement, and racism. Reclaiming, restoring and archiving the history is a start. The collection will be available to researchers and general public alike.

We need to act now before the assets are lost forever.

I want to reclaim the narrative for the “man in the fedora,” for all the “bachelors” and the families that never were. The stories belong to us.
