Commemoration: Glimpse of Life under Chinese Exclusion Act

 

On behalf of the Calgary Kaiping Association, I would like to invite you to participate in our Canada Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Workers in Calgary for 2023.

This community-lead initiative is to honour the 4,000 Chinese lives that were lost during the construction of the railroad and the 17,000 Chinese labourers that came to Canada between 1881 and 1884 who participated in the construction of the first transcontinental railway (Canadian Pacific Railway “CPR”) that consolidated the Canadian Confederation. This year marks the centenary of the passing of the Chinese Immigration Act, 1923 (also known as Chinese exclusion act).

DATE AND TIME: July 01, 2023 @ 10:00 A.M. Reception and 10:30 A.M. Start Time

The Calgary Kaiping Association will once again to encourage organizations and individuals to lay a wreath or bouquet at the Westside of the building’s community garden in memory of the Chinese Railroad Workers. You are also welcome to lay flowers or other offering as may be your tradition in paying respect to those who are deceased.
